Fieldwork Spotlight: Partnering on Fuel Treatment Research

TEA is exciting to be leading a new research project, Creating Linear Fuel Treatments to Effectively Protect Communities and Wildland Firefighters on the Colorado Front Range. This work will directly inform new guidance for managers and communities on where and how to implement treatments that support effective suppression, safe evacuations, and landscape resilience.

In July and August, TEA’s Resilient Communities and Ecosystems department teamed up with staff from the Colorado State University Drone Center to collect data as a part of the research project. The team collected high-resolution arial imagery in a variety of locations along the Colorado Front Range, which will help our researchers evaluate roadside conditions and fuel treatments and their relationship to wildfire risk, evacuation hazards, and community safety.  The research is ongoing, with an expected publication in 2026-27.

This project was partially funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
